As most of us know, today we sit a lot with our heads hanging down and sinking in the chest. Over time this position causes resting length changes of postural muscles. Rounding of the back and shoulders with a forward protruding head makes proper shoulder function impossible and sets the shoulder up for injury. If you have rounded shoulders try this free program

The brain is the organizer of movement. The brain's "awareness" of the body decays over time. The less aware the brain is of the body, the less it is able to accomplish the goals of your exercise, sport and movement practice. A good routine includes actively refreshing the brain's knowledge of the body with proven methods.

Cardio benefits can be measured. Gains in efficiency and thus health come from consistent rhythmic movements which increase the heart rate. There are three cardio zones that most people care about. Heart rates are broken into zones one through three and vary by age and gender. Having the technology available is great to record your heart rate while you exercise. But if you do not have the tech it is surely still possible. Zone 1 - you can talk without struggle Zone 2 - talking is a challenge Zone 3 - cant talk much, not sustainable very long For some people zone 1 training is all that is required. Talk to your trainer about systematic cardio progression. Cardio work is measure by Intensity (heart rate) x Duration. One can slowly breath through the nose while sitting, moving gently the legs or arms, sipping oxygen raising the heart rate and thus achieving cardio benefit. Simple.

I love this book! This book details what happened when a school district changed traditional physical education to fitness. Not only did the kids enjoy the health benefits, but their academic performance improved significantly! The 3 Big Lessons Cognitive performance is linked to neuron density. Cognitive decay is linked to a decrease in neuron density. So, in order to train to increase neuron density: Cardio - Builds New Neurons. Movement Practice - learning how to move, dance, tai chi, new bodyweight exercises all work to "cement" the new neurons into the neural network. Memorize Stuff - "fire the brain cell", I guess it's use it or lose it!

Many of our modern aches and pains in the back, hip, knee and shoulders are often due to muscular imbalances. Muscles have an optimal resting length. These lengths can change do to daily movement patterns like too much sitting, which causes the front of the hips (hip flexors) to shorten and thus tighten. Trainers with advanced knowledge can identify these imbalances and implement targeted stretching and strengthening, usually with bodyweight only to restore balance. Becoming aware of one's daily movement patterns is important and may require making some mindful changes of how one moves as well as light maintenance exercises to prevent re-occurrences.
